Happened across the Installation Instructions sheet for the tank bag which states:

This installation should be performed by an authorized Star dealer or a qualified mechanic. Some components require information from the model's service manual for proper installation or adjustment. Be sure to have a service manual on hand, if necessary, before proceeding with the installation.

There's also a warning against tampering with the emissions system and that competition parts are intended for closed course driving only.

This is one complicated tank bag huh?

Step 2 of the instructions says to put the bike on a level surface and set the parking breke. Parking brake? What parking brake?

It also lists the estimated time to install as 0.1 hours. Six minutes?

So if you have your Star mechanic install it 10 times you have to pay an hour of shop time.

And someone got paid to write that. Hahahahaha

The shops I'm familiar with will charge an hr for the 1 bag install

EZ solution. screw the instructions! If you run into prob read instructions while ignoring all useless warnings and other languages (3/4 of all manuals )

The service manual will tell you where the tank is located on your specific model.

The disgronificator valve is located just under the tank and to the right, between the cylinder hinge percerfier and the extrusion indicator. If you accidently knock against one of those they could cause SMC (Spontaneous Motorcyle Combustion), which is bad for the environment and would cause emissions issues with burning plastic and rubber and such.

If the surface is not level you could install the tank bag slightly off center. This could cause and issue with the wind tunnel engineered aerodynmics and drag coefficient, which in turn could effect the emissions as stated in the previous entry. IN addition, a bag installed improperly could cause the bike to veer to the left or right due to altered air flow dynamics if you don't get it centered exactly. Laser levels are best for this application. As far as the parking brake is concerned...now do you understand the need for the service manual? Helloooo...McFly...

That estimate is for a factory trained mechanic with coffee breaks. Your actual installation time could vary depending on whether or not you currently function with more than a brain stem.

They have families to feed too.

Close . . . They're proof that 90% of the crap in the owner's manual and these instructions are written by the legal department, not engineering.

I thought everyone carried a brick, I mean parking brake with them.

Yamaha is just covering their butts. If it wasn't for idiot Americans sueing everybody for things that are common sense you wouldn't see instructions like this. I'm sure if you installed the tank bag on an incline and the bike fell on you cause your an idiot you would sue them for millions.

Yeah, I read the installation instructions too. What a hoot.

The instructions are stupid, but the bag is great, I should have gotten it a long time ago.

For those of you that were actually able to get the tank bag on your bike, how do you like it? How much does it hold?

Actually it doesn't hold that much but does make a nice way to hold a small piece of map and an mp3 player. Part of the problem with it is the zipper is under the small map flap in an attempt to make it more water proof. Then there's a big hump in the bottom of it to fit over the chrome strip on the Raider tank. That hump is much larger than necessary though cause after you put it on the tank you could probably slide a TShirt in between the bag and the chrome piece. It also has a cut out for the speedo making the bag even smaller. Because the bag has to sit below the speedo, it sits all the way down on the tank next to the seat so you pretty much have to pull over and stop to look at the map or do anything with it. I rarely care how fast I'm going so I think I'd have been better off with a generic tank bag I could put over the speedo farther up on the tank that I could get more things in.

I like the bag. I had sun glasses, reading glasses, camera, extra gloves, cell phone, wallet, cap and could have put more into it. I had the bag expanded which is done by unzipping the expansion. I should have gotten it a long time ago.

With this bag and a sissy bar bag I've got what I need for day rides.

I bought a lawn chair from Sam's Club this weekend. That sucker came with 3 warning labels.....what the heck. What this country needs are common sense screeners for Judges. If it is stupid then they kick your ass for filing the case. Hire hockey players in the off season for the job.
