thick syrup like stuff in air filter

    I bought a 2001 V-star 1100 about a month ago and the first owner left gas in the carbs for about 7 months. I ran one and a half tank of gas using Seafoam. I took the tank of and spayed carb cleaner on the linkage and some in the carbs while it was running. Iran it down the street pretty hard and when I got back I removed the air filter cover and there was a sustance that looked like syrup in the bottom. What could it be? could it be varnish that washed out? Should i be worried?

    Is it oil? I often have a little oil in my air box, and that is normal from what I understand.

    I get a little bit of oil in mine also.

    It's been my experience that air cooled engines like the 1100 in the V Star are put together with rather 'loose' tolerances. This is most noticeable when the engine is cooler. As the engine components expand when they warm up, tolerances become tighter.

    This is most likely the reason you are finding oil - sticky goo - etc in the air filter. Just make sure you warm things up before cranking on the throttle and I'm sure you'll keep this "blow-by" to a minimum.

    I found oil in mine as well. I would say about 1/2 teaspoon full. As long as the air filter is clean just clean the residual oil and check it periodiocally.

    It is most likely oil. I had the same problem and researched it to death. Finally found some stuff telling me that there is an airbox under the gas tank that tends to collect oil vapors. As the vapors cool the oil begins to pool in the airbox. Eventually enough oil will pool in the airbox and it will begin to drain down into the "dog bowl" and you will find a teaspoon or so there just about every time you drive until you clean it out of the airbox. I was told to sort of expect it about every 3000 miles or so. So just get a buddy, lift the gas tank, unscrew the top of the air box and clean up the oil and you shouldn't see any more of that for about 300o miles or so. Hope this helps.
