new here and i just got a 99 v star 1100..got the regulator fixed and now i noticed that the tail light only works when braking..but it pulses for a little and then goes solid..i pulled the bulb and noticed the fillament broken so i got the same bulb new and it hasn't ch\\anged anything. is it stock for the tail light to pulsate when braking? or is it a stupid after market "modulator" and if so, could that throw off the running light in the rear? i need this fixed so i can ride at night with no problems..thanx
If you have a circuit tester, you can check to see if you have any power at both bulb connections. If not, you'll probable need to follow the running light wire up to where you do get power.
It does sound like you have a flashing brake light which is a cool thing to have. I'd try to find the module that does the flashing to see if your wiring troubles might be there...
i'll check for that peice, but are you saying bulbs as in there are 2 bulbs in the tail? mine has one
thanx
not 2 bulbs.... the bulb has two contact points on the bottom that match 2 contact points in the bulb socket. Check for power on both contact points in the socket with a circuit tester to make sure you have power to both...
thanx guys, i fixed it..haha..it turns out that the bulb was in upside down..i didn't know there was a right and a wrong side to put it in..
I love it when there's a quick fix like that!
ya we'd taken the seat off and found the special modulator and disconnected/tested a bunch of stuff and a test lamp is what we found the problem with in the rear..it was only about 15 total
Awesome! - at some point you may even want to re-install the modulator. I'm just glad it was an easy fix.
o ya we did already..it wasn't making any problem at all..its actually a simple install..you just cut the wire going to the brake light right under the seat..then the modulator has two wire sticking out..one wire connects to the piece of the wire you just cut to the engine and the other wire connects to the half of the cut wire that goes to the rear...i find it funny that all the previous owner's wiring on these components were just taped together..the wires just barely touched eachother..so i took the tape off and did it the right way with connectors
Isn't it amazing what you find on other people's bikes? I've seen a bit of that on other bikes I've owned. Doing it right means fewer headaches down the road.
I've found some great connectors to use. They are the actual metal connector part of GM "Weather Pack" connectors used on GM cars and trucks to provide a weather tight seal. The metal connector part is really no wider than a 12 gage wire so it fits nicely in tight places. There is also a male and female end so you can take them apart again if you want. Simply slip some appropriately sized shrink tubing over each side after you;ve crimped them to the wire end and you've got a very tight connection. I love the fact that I can take things apart if I need to and in my mind, they work much better than those old blue butt connectors or "scotch locks". They certainly look a lot better...as a matter of fact, they are almost unnoticeable. You can get them a NAPA Auto Parts....
