    Hello all,

New member here asking hopefully not a overly baked question...

I just sold my first bike (due to long distance move), a 2002 Honda Shadow ACE 750. It was a great bike, looked beautiful, and never had any issues. I only owned it for a short time, and only put 1000+ miles on it, but it was fun while I had it.

I have started to look again at bikes here in Gainesville (FL), and really am drawn to the VStars. I really enjoyed the cruiser style bike, and think I want to continue with another.

There is a beautiful looking used/late-year VStar (2006) 650 available locally (for $4500+, with windsheild and passenger backrest add-on), and I really like how they look on paper and styling wise. I haven't had a chance to sit on it yet or anything, but from first glance, it look like a great deal. I've been doing alot of research lately on the 650s, and was hoping to get some rider opinions/input here.

I really like the styling, and the fact that they have shaft drives (wasn't a huge fan of all the cleaning/fling of chain, but no biggie I guess). They look quite a bit like the Shadows, and was curious if the engine difference would be that noticable, coming from a 750?

I also have done some research on the new 950, though not sure if that would be too much...I'm 6'0", 178lbs...that 750 was fairly comfortable to move around...not sure if the 950 would be a bear for my size and experience.

Anyway, any input or recomendations would be great. If you've ridden a ACE and VStar 650, I'd be curoius to hear your thoughts on the differences, likes/dislikes...I know we're all different riders of diff sizes and experience, but any info I can get would really help...

    Thanks!

I think you will not go wrong with the vstar, but i am litlle bias for the 1100

Yea.....i'm a little bias towards the 1100 also. Although the 650 is a sweet ride. I'm 5'-7" 170 lbs. and have no problem with handling the 1100. You
can't go wrong with either. Good luck on your decision and ride safe.

I'm 5'11 and 200 lbs and find the 650 moves with no probs. Even 2 up it has plenty of power. Plus that leaves room for the fun of modding it with pipes and a GAK/Hypercharger to give even more power.

How many miles is on the 2006? 650's are great bikes, they handle extremely well, get great gas mileage too! I travel in group or single to work and haven't had any problems with speed and handling. I've recently changed my stock bars and grips to make long distance riding more comfortable. You can't go wrong with this bike! Good luck

Thanks for the input so far!

How many miles is on the 2006?
The 2006 has 5,135 miles. I just looked at the actual price, and I was off a few (should have looked again before I listed!)...it's $4,795. It's got the Raven/Midnight custom paint also, along with the couple add ons I listed initially. Here's the web listing for it:

I own an 07 650 5'10" 270lbs. My cousin (who I live with) has an 07 Shadow 750. The V-star is more comfortable as far as the seat. Your arms are lower on the star then the Shadow. The star is a little warmer on the legs because it is air cooled where your 750 was liquid cooled. I haven't ridden his bike on long distance stuff so I don't know about the overall ride but on the short, slower rides my bike was easier to control, more comfortable to sit on.

I liked the 750's bars better, and the 750 is faster.

I have a 650 and I am 6', 190lbs and it handles me just fine. I did add some bars with pegs (custom made)to the front for leg stretch on long rides, but other then that i love mine! Have had several differnent sizes and this one seems to be the easiest ride for size and power. Other then the ole 650 Savage I had. That lil sucker was light and handled great.

    06 650 Classic here.

    6' 205 lbs.

Awesome bike for me. A very good friend of mine has the Shadow ACE 750, and while I have not ridden his bike, he has ridden a mutual friend of ours bike who also owns a Star 650. He says he likes our bikes better.

The 650 has a whole lot more power than I gave it credit for when I first considered it. I commute 70 miles round trip every day with a combination of Interstate and city driving. Flawless. The only complaint I have is I sort of wish it had a sixth gear, or that the gear reductions were more suitable for Interstate driving, but a lot of people say the same thing. The bike is fine, but it just sounds like it's wound out, even though there is plenty of throttle left to twist at 80 mph.

I own a 650 vstar and have ridden the 750 ace as well. I dont think you will notice a difference in power, to me they seemed the same.

My buddy is 6foot and 135 pounds and loves my bike (vstar 650) and he rides an ace. as far as the one your looking at it, make sure to inspect it to make sure it hasnt been put down. beast way to determine this is to look at the tank, mirrors etc for scratches that you wouldnt see everyday

Lots of great posts...thanks for the input everyone. I think I can safely say that the 650 will be a good replacment for my ACE. Looking forward to getting some seat time on one this weekend hopefully...

best way to determine this is to look at the tank, mirrors etc for scratches that you wouldnt see everyday
Thanks for the heads up. I actually know first hand about dropping one...I dropped my ACE at a gas station once. I was having a bad day, my mind was wandering, and forgot to put the kickstand down at the pump. Down she went...I caught it, but the weight was too much and let her down easy. Scratched up the rear view mirror and end cap of left hand grip. Man, talk about embarrasing...but, I learned a lesson in that I need to keep my head in the game if I'm going to ride, or don't ride at all/stay home...

Definitely, If you are already us to a 750 then go with the VStar 1100 don't even bother with the 650. The 950 is not even out yet, and is the experimental trial basis for 2009. The 1100 will give you the performance you need.

I think you should look at your riding and then decide on the bike that fits your needs.

If mainly driving that is 60mph or less the 650 is the best bike for that. But..... if your doing highway speeds of 65mph+ the 650 is not as good once you get above 60mph regularly.

Not saying the 650 can not do highway, it does fine, but acceleration above 60 is pretty slow. Below 60 it is quicker than a lot of cruisers but once you hit 5th acceleration is not as good.

Saying this I love my 650 and use it on interstates here and there with NO issues, but if I needed to drive interstate speeds daily I would look at the 1100.

female 150 lb 5'3 and can put my v-star 650 anywhere. It's experience that counts in ridding.

If he is really your buddy, you would feed him a few burgers.

6 foot and 135 pounds is paper thin.
