So one of my students (a football player at the University) didn't show up for a mandatory attendance day today. Turns out that he got rundown by a car on his moped. Via email I asked him if he was wearing any protective gear and he said he had glasses on...they broke. He said that he's got some road rash but protected his head from the road with his arms.

I'll see him on Tuesday and I'm willing to bet he was wearing shorts, flipflops an nothing for protective gear.

Riding into work today (in my car) I saw three crotch rockets with riders popping wheelies on the freeway. One of the riders had no shirt, the others were in t-shirts and shorts. It was crowded enough that if one of them had gone down it would have been all over for him. When the one without the shirt came passed me (on the right), I looked at him and mouthed "idiot." He promptly cut across the front of my car and I almost hit him. How stupid can you get? It's bad enough riding shirtless or in shorts, popping wheelies on the freeway and giving bikers a bad name, but to cut across a CAR that will run over you if you misjudged? I rode the crotch rockets of my day ('70s) and I can't remember trying to go so far out of my way to kill myself.
What they were doing is getting ready to thin out the gene pool. From a chic's perspective, I LOVE A MAN IN UNIFORM! Guys on hot bikes in shorts, etc. look dorkey. Personally, I wear ATGATT. I also love mesh jackets in hot weather! Someone said that jeans protect better than a leather jacket. Yes, some leathers sold for bike gear are actually fashion leather and useless on a bike. Need to buy the right thickness.

Answer me this tho: How the heck does someone shift up with flip-flops. That would hurt my tender tootsies....

I have been riding since the late 80's, and while I may do a lot of stupid things, shorts are one of my pet peeves as far as not doing. We are currently on vacation in Florida, and I brought 2 pairs of jeans I got for fathers day. Wore one on the ride down. I was going on a short ride this morning and went to put on the second pair of jeans. Wrong tag, wrong size. need to be returned. Stupid me, I'll make an exception and go. No accidents or anything, just realized that the jeans actually are cooler on the bike than the shorts. While in traffic, the heat from the exhaust and the engine roasted my legs at stops. Not on the Yamaha, but still should be the same. Sun was hotter than the trip down on the top of my legs. I was more uncomfortable after an hour and a half ride than I was on the 6 hour ride down. To everyone who thinks they are cooler, I assure you they are not. Being a guy, the hair on your legs blowing at 60 mph is irritating also. Not looking to shave them any time soon, just switch back to my jeans.

The one time I wore jeans instead of my Vanson Leathers I felt it was way hotter WITH jeans. Besides don't they say jeans last about 2 seconds while sliding down the road in them.
I recently bought some Draggin' jeans. I also bought some padding to wear underneath them. I find those hotter then my leathers.
I like to wear the jeans when I going into a store or am going to be walking around a bit after riding, but if I'm just riding I wear the leathers.

Wearing "the uniform" instead might get you more loving too! Hot bike!, but sorry the shorts don't cut it for hotness!

It can get in the upwards of 130 degrees here, so a leather jacket and chaps just dont cut it, more likely to pass out from heat stroke and then skid down the road wearing too much equipment than wearing t shirts, or shorts. I guess some people in cars think its dumb to be on bikes period. To each his own.

I'd be in heaven if it got to 130 up here. Being half Middle Eastern, I love the heat. But it's easy for me to say ATGATT when I don't have to deal with those temperatures. Hey what about a mesh body suit with armour!

After seeing more and more guys riding with shorts, all I have to say is if you insist on doing this, PLEASE work on those "6 packs" (abs not beer). Nothing is more unattractive than a gut hanging over the gas tank. No hotness there....

I try to were all the gear all the time. I spent my life wearing safety equipment and saw what happens when you get caught without it. A lot of the time it is your only second chance.

I dunno, depends on what you wear underneath it. Could be the new hotness.

On that note, I saw "stupid/hot" today. Couldn't decide which impacted me more, the "stupid" or the "hot". Down in Annapolis, I watched this bada-- woman in boots, jeans, FF helmet and a tank top roll in on a sportbike. Fit, but not TOO thin, tats down the center of her back, plus she had uh, large ...displacement cylinders. On her bike, I mean. Yeah.

Anyway, I couldn't decide if I wanted to throw-down and kiss her, or smack her around for risking her lovely skin.

Give her my number, I'll straighten her out.
