Just drove from Alabama to Michigan this week (in the car). A bike rider in Indiana with a helmet on their head was a rarity--more likely to see it hangin on their sissy bar than their noggin. They would be in jeans, boots, vest, and gloves--but nothing protecting their brains! Maybe its an image thing. Figure.

HEY, I wear jeans because my legs are white, boots because its more comfy, and fingerless gloves because we dont believe in paving, chip and seal sends rocks your way and hurts like a mother on the knuckles. Got a shield for my handsome face. there are a few wearing sweat boxes but yes, not very many

Same thing out here in South Dakota. We get lots of bike traffic through this area headed west for Sturgis this time of year and 90% don't wear helmets. I suppose the stats are in their favor since they are just cruising on the interstate. They may not encounter too many crazy cagers, but we sure have a lot of critters crossing the highways. Some of the raccoons I've seen squished on the road are huge, big enough to take down a biker. I guess it's their choice... as for me, I prefer to keep my cobweb filled head protected.

Yeah, we don't have to wear them out here. I envy the guys that just get on the bike and go, but I put the gear on anyway. As often as it's been raining here this summer, I appreciate the head covering as much as the protection.

Same in Illinois and Florida. Whenever I cross the river into IL or fly down to my house in FL I'm startled at all the people who don't wear helmets. I've always worn one regardless of the law.

I saw a guy in Arkansas with no helmet riding with a cell phone up to his ear.

We where in North Dakota last month with my son's spring hockey team it was a real shocker to see how many bikers ride with no lid. Up hear in Canada it's the law from coast to coast. Even the non-riding parents were blown away by the helmetless riders, I think everyone of them commented at some point. I would say it was likely 90% of the riders and passengers with no helmet. Had to chuckle at the ones with the helmet on the sissy bar.

Here in Florida it is the Harley riders...No joke. If you ride a Harley in Florida you don't wear a helmet....sure seems that way anyway

Having gone down hard in my younger days, and , while taking personal inventory to see if I was intact, finding a long, deep gash on my helmet made me a believer! Personally, I hate the idea of the government telling me I have to wear a helmet, but you're foolish if you don't. I don't want MY health insurance or taxes to go up to keep a vegetable alive! In Texas, if you ride w/o a helmet, you must show medical coverage or financial responsibility. A lot of riders don't seem to know this, and face serious fines if they cannot produce proof of this coverage.

When I went down 2 weeks ago, I was very happy I had on my full face helmet, It had big scrapes down one side. That could have been my head.

Living in Canada, we have helmet legislation as Bear said. I've never had to think twice about wearing a helmet. Years ago in my young and wild days, my boyfriend suddenly decided to ride up a 45 degree incline. Of course, we didn't make it. Bike fell over backwards and I landed hard on the back of my head - quite stunned for awhile. I don't even want to think what would have happened if I hadn't had a helmet on.

Last summer, a very experienced friend of mine had his head run over by the back tire of a very large 4X4 pick up. (Collision not his fault.) Other than some bruises he was fine. He was wearing a half helmet which was even more amazing - the tire ran over from ear to ear. Not sure how the outcome would have been if the other direction... He wouldn't be here today to mentor my riding if he hadn't had that helmet.

You wouldn't get half a mile in the UK without being pulled over. But I'd wear one anyway...

Well, coming home today (from Mich back to Bama) I noticed KY must not have a helmet law either. I guess I slept through KY as my wife drove on the way up. I didn't mean to sound critical in my original post--everybody in those states has a choice. The truth is, if I knew for a fact that I wouln't fall, I'd wear as little as unobscenely possible. Being a relatively new rider (2 years and 7,000 miles), you would think as I get more confident and comfortable with my bike I might gear down, but I find myself gearing up more than ever.

No helmet law in iowa at all not even for minors. And ya maybe only see one out of 50 people that wears a lid.

The wife and I wear our helmets all the time. It seems like there are a lot of folks that seem to think that looking cool is more important than being safe. I have talked to a lot of them that say it's their choice to not wear a helmet. I don't want to take away their freedoms but their decision also effects me..insurance premiums are set based on safety statistics. Just like not wearing safety belts..we all end up paying. MHO
