Hello to all, I'm the latest newbie to join the club. Technically, I can't be a member yet because I'm not a Raider owner - key word: YET! I'm moving from SoCal to NC next month, and when I get there I will sell my truck and finally buy my RAIDER that I've been drooling over for months now.

I have been lurking for a while, and I know you guys hate the dumb questions that rookies always ask, so I will try to ask them all at once - here goes:

What is meant by "Raven" - I assume that's the term for a non "S" model?

What does BAK stand for? (Billet Air Kit, or something to do with the filter, I'm guessing )

Are the tribal flames only available on the red paint? I like the blacked-out version, but I like those tribal flames, too.

Does anyone know when the 09 will be available?

And finally, everyone has a certain part of their bike that they hate (like many of you taking the chrome off the tank). One part of this bad-a$$ bike that looks cheesy to me is the cheap, finned plastic piece that covers the inner part of the rear hub (in the center of the brake disc). Has anyone removed this plastic piece to see what the hub would look like without it?

Sorry if I just made you hate something about your bike that you had never noticed before!

Raven just means "black". The "S" model isn't about the color, it just means there are chrome covers over a few of the secondary engine components. Most Red and Blue seem to be "S" chromed models, but you can get them without the chrome. You can also buy the chromed parts separately if you want to change yours into an "S" model later.

"Big Air Kit" means bigger air filters, usually get installed along with a fuel processor and aftermarket exhaust.

Thanks. I like the Raven look - the S model looks like too much work!

There was one question I forgot to ask:

I have heard a few people say to check the coil connections when they are having problems with power or fuel economy - are there different ignition settings that you can change with connections?

No, some of the Raiders were delivered with the right side coils wired to the wrong cylinders. The wires labeled #2 should go to the coil for the front cylinder.

    1) I believe the tribal flames are only on the red s model.

    2) Yes, some people have removed the ring from the rotor. The rotor looks nice without it.

A friend of mine bought a blacked-out bike with flames.

The Raven is the black model which is not available in "s". If someone bought one with flames they were probably painted on at the dealership. I know a dealer in Denver is having some custom paint work done whne the bikes come in. The flames are only available on the red "S" from the factory. The tommy blue is only available in
    "S".

    BAK is big air kit.

I hated the rider foot pegs as soon as I went for the first ride. I like to rest my feet on top of the pegs and they kept sliding down because of the taper. I went with Kuryakin switchblades.

And the "S" has alot more chrome (S” model gets even more chrome: chrome triple clamps, fork sliders, air box cover, headlight housing, handlebar risers, engine covers, turn signals, and natural aluminum pulley and cover, wheels, brake calipers and handlebar switch covers.) and the Red "S" is also the fastest, let me know if I missed anything.

You guys hit them all - thanks!

Do you recommend buying new (maybe wait until the 09 comes out) or buy one that's already been tricked out a little bit?

They are hard enough to find new, that is probably the way you will have to go this year. If you buy new check out the Yamaha Extended Service plan. I bought it. I covers all sceduled service and oil changes. Note all of the threads about how much of a problem it is to change the oil on the Raider. It is worth the price, it will save you money.

Good advice, all of it. Thanks again - I'll try not to wear out my welcome here as a wannabe. Come August I should be a full-fledged member.

BTW, it seems as if the black one is the fastest, but the flames on the red one might act as boosters.
