Can anyone tell me how the lock mechanism is supposed to work? Or maybe post a photo of the left side cover lock mechanism? This is the one that covers the tool kit. Mine is a 2005, and it seems they were the same for a number of years.
I got a replacement side cover for my bike as the PO lost the original during the 18 month stint in a couple different storage units.
But, the replacement cover didn't come with a locking mechanism and I'm not sure what I need to order. I can't tell if he used something to pry the lock out or what, it seems the hole on the bike were the lock would go in is a little bent up.
Oh, and is it supposed to use the same key as the ignition switch?
I'll try and post a picture tonight when I get home, that might help me explain a little better!
Thanks!
There is a grommet in the hole to make the lock fit right. The lock is supposed to be the same as your other key. The lock mounts with a plastic nut on the inside of the cover.
I can't post a pic as I am at Star Daze without my camera cable. Any more questions, let me know as I just played around with the cover/lock the other day.

Hey Dan, thanks for the reply...
I've attached a couple photos, I'm guessing that something in the lock cylinder goes into the hole and turns, locking the cover in place?
Check here 216.37.204.206/xtremepowersports/Yamaha_OEM/YamahaMC.asp?Type=13&A=495&B=22 it's a schematic of what holds it all together. Hope it helps.

Thanks Mige... that helps a lot. I had found one site with that schematic, but it was in much smaller print and I couldn't quite figure it out. I think I only need the lock cylinder, but I will probably order the grommet and nut too just in case the one that's on my bike is messed up.
had a similar prob and yes the lock is the same key as the tank/ignition
