In June I picked up an 04 Silverado 1100 with 5000 km on it. I now have 7500 km and have an appoitment booked with the shop to check the valves. The bike has Vance and Hines slip on's and has always burped on deceleration. the local shop said they will also rejet the carb as it looks like it may be a little on the lean side as the front pipe is starting to yellow.
My question, should I get them to install an aftermarket K& N filter before they set up the carbs, will it make a difference. The shop told me I will loose a few MPG but gain some performance- is this true
any thoughts. Can I swich from the stock filter later to a K & N or will the carbs need to be adjected.
By the way I did my first oil change a month ago, It was not as bad as everyone make it out to be. I'm sure it will be under 1 hour next time.
So far love the bike
thanks for the help

Hey man, that's your first post....Welcome from AZ....
If it were me paying somebody to do my carb, I'd want the intake set up right. The K&N will make a bit of a difference. Once it's jetted correctly PMS screw adjustment can get rid of most of that pop..along with AIS removal.
Quick Mick is right gotta remove the ais but not sure about just throwing in a k&n into the stock air box. Kurakyn makes a nice box as well as barons and some people have good luck with max air. I have barons with no trouble so far and i got caught in a down pour for about an hour on the interstate.
If you're planning to do anything to the intake (K&N or some other), you definitely want to set the jetting up with those modifications installed. If not, you will have to pay money to do it again down the road. With slip-on mufflers, it is not always necessary to re-jet, but your shop can tell you for sure.
Removing (or disabling) the AIS is also a must if you want to eliminate the popping at low speed / deceleration.
Everything I've read on the subject indicates that a certain amount of discoloration is normal on single-wall pipes - at least up near the head where the pipe connects to the motor. Vance & Hines, like many other brands, use chrome covers that wrap around the actual pipe. Though the pipe is also chrome-plated, it is not meant to be visible. Does your V&H pipe set have these covers installed? If so, are the covers dis-coloring, or just the pipe underneath? If it's just the pipe, then there is probably nothing wrong with your jetting. If the beauty cover is discoloring, then I'd be more concerned because that external cover shouldn't normally get hot enough to discolor.
Extended idling with the choke on can also cause the pipes to discolor even though the carb jetting is acceptable.
Good luck on this. Just remember that you want to re-jet ONLY if needed. If you increase the jet size without adding additional airflow, your fuel mileage will suffer, and your bike may not run as well (you might actually lose some performance). These V-Stars are not set up from the factory as lean as some - Honda comes to mind - so you can usually add slip on mufflers and even some full exhaust systems without rejetting. If you are working with a competent shop, they will sort this out for you in short order.
