Now that I'm a member I have some patches, so I need a leather vest to put the patches on. What vests are you guys using and where can I buy one? I have found many online and just need some recomendations as to which one is best.

Kind of a personal choice thing. Got mine at Cycle Gear FMC $50. Before you order over the internet go down to the stealership and try some on for size. I like the side lace type as I can let it out a little to wear hooded sweatshirt under it in early spring and fall.

I also have an FMC. Good quality. Mine does not have the side laces but I wished it did. There are leather shops around here that have prices comparable to the internet.

I had a look at $19 vest and I wouldn't trust them very much. They have nothing listed in the description. I have to wonder if it's a case of "If you can't say anything nice; don't say anything at all." Where as some of their higher priced vests, while still relatively inexpensive, have a detailed description.

Personally I look for side lacing. It gives you some room to wear just the vest on hot days and expand it for when you put it over the jacket. Altho vest extenders help with that the laces even it out a bit.

Buffalo leather/diamond plate/patchwork on a vest isn't much of an issue safety wise because I really doubt if there is much protection provided by a vest, expecially with pins, patches, and geegaw all over the thing. But you are moving into the area of a MC (or in this case Riding Club) Cut (traditionally what you call the vest once you put club colours on it). It's all about pride in your club and pride in your colours. No body expects a silk lined italian leather vest by gucci but a cheap ass buffalo leather vest sends out the wrong message. JMHO

I am a member of Chapter 5105 in Sarnia, Ontario. Welcome to STAR. I know you will enjoy it and meet and make many new friends.
I have a Roadcrome vest that I find works very well for me. As another poster had mentioned, mine has the side laces that let you expand if the need is there. It costs a little more, but is worth it.

They are ugly. They risk burn through the threads or vinyl covering when used as saddlebags. Plus the the sewing on any leather is it's weakest link, especially if it gets wet, patchwork has lots of weak links.

I'm also looking fwd. in joining the local chapter 297 here in Ft.Lauderdale.

They sound like a good bunch and with the riding weather being nice almost all year long they do rides all time.

Hey kman, Glad to here you have become a Star member. Hope to see you at Star Days in Billings. Does Big R in Kalispell carry motorcycle leathers? The one in Spokane does, they carry Interstate brand leathers. That's where I bought my vest for about $45. If you are going to wear it for chapter rides, I like the vest with side laces. That way you can wear it over your jacket.

    Good Luck & Good Riding

Yes, I intend to be in Billings at the National Star Days. I'm also considering Northwest StarBQ in Medford Oregon and another trip to New Mexico. Man I wish spring would get here.
