You know what makes me so mad.. I just bought a Custom V star 1100. The first thing most people say is " Why didnt you buy a Harley?".. Most of these people dont even own bikes. Why does everyone think Harleys are the be all end all. No love for the japanese cruisers.

Next time you show your bike to a non-biker, just tell them it is the new "vstar" Harley Model. They will just tell you how cool it is and will have no idea.

A lot of people think highly of a Harley.

However, a lot of people don't.

Just because someone CAN afford a Harley, that doesn't mean that they HAVE to buy a Harley.

I forget which one of our members' signatures it is, but it reads -
    I can afford a Harley, it's the attitude I can't afford.

I agree with richarth. Most people that don't know bikes give you the Harley comment. I've got all the Yamaha badges taken off my V Star, so when they ask. I just say it's a Star. I usually get either a funny look...or a "ohhh cool".

Most Harley riders I know aren't snobs anyway (at least to my face) We ride together all the time - sport bikes included. They feel just like me --- that what's most important is THAT you ride, not what you ride.

Sometimes it seems like we "self impose" a pecking order .. by brand or size of bike .. in the biking community. There IS a pecking order for sure, but it's ranked by the size of the smile on riders face...and nothing else.

I have no hate for Harley or metric cruisers. My brother has a Fat Boy but i have a 'liner and he is always telling me that my bike is better. HD is an "image". As soon as my neighbor (owns 3 HD's) saw my new 'liner he asked me when I was going to get a real bike. I told him as soon as Harley makes a quality motorcycle that isn't overpriced and dosen't leak. Oh and...by the by...what's the displacement on your bike?

I've gotten it both ways, some know what it is, others ask if it's a Harley. I'm proud when I say it's a Yamaha Roadstar. As far as harley riders go, I have also seen it both ways. I have riding buddies that own harleys, and it's the whole enjoyment of riding together. Then I have at parking lots, stop lights, or drive by's where the HD riders will completly ignore me or snub me when I try to talk to them. To each his/her own.

It's like the different branches of the service vs Marines. Marine Corp has the image as being the most hardcore, although I didn't think jump school and ranger school was any picnic!...

I'm getting older, I want more for the money. The hell with the image anymore I'm learning, just be happy...

I've had people ask me what model of Harley I have. I tell them it's a Star Warrior. After a deer in the headlights look I tell them it's a Yamaha and it will outrun most Harley's, plus it looks better than a Harley.

Oh, because it would cost about $6,000 to $8,000 more thats why!

Their not snobs, they are just tired of being reminded, everytime they see a metric cruiser, that they didn't get their monies worth........

My Dad has 3 Harleys. A Street Glide, Soft Tail Heritage, & Soft Tail Deluxe. I admit that they look a little nicer than my 1100 Classic but that is mostly because of all the fancy extra Chrome that he has put on.

As far as riding though, I can corner and Maneuver better on my 1100. My Yamaha seems like it has a much lower center of gravity. As far as power, my 1100 is more powerful than than the stock Deluxe but not quite as powerful as the Heritage that has had a lot of modifications done to it.

I have to say that I am really pleased with my Yammie and don't think I would ever buy a Harley unless I had money to burn.

Are you sure the 1100 has more power than the 1450cc 96ci HD?

It sure does feel that way. The Deluxe is completely stock though and my 1100 has a new exhaust, Dyna 3000, & Cobra Jetting System. My brother though does have a Fat Boy with a 96 Cubic Inch Engine that has some major modifications that will leave my 1100 in the dust on take offs.

The Deluxe may have more power than my 1100 but the take off it is a little slower than my 1100 with the modifications. My dad plans on putting on a new exhaust in the next month so it will be interesting to feel the difference.

    VzdarManiac,
I am in the same boat. All of my co-workers that ride are Harley Owners. Only one person in the group gives me grief about owning a Yamaha. My response towards his ridicule is always the same: I like the way the bike looks and rides and I have not had one single problem with it.

I had a Harley rider tell me that my new Raider was a " wanna be"! I ask him why it would want to be slower, not look or handle as good and cost $5000 more... All he could say is "Harleys have better resale value"..... I like my bike and thats all that matters!

I keep hearing the resale value thing too. If you like your HD so much why are you so worried about what it's worth when you sell it?

I work and I ride with a bunch of Harley folks. The ones at work give me grief from time to time and I give it right back as well. The few that I ride with are the same way. Since I know all of them, it is done all in good fun and fellowship. I have to admit, the Harleys are nice bikes but I have witnessed 2 things while riding. At idle waiting on a light, the Harley motors appear to want to jump off the frame they idle so rough. Also with the harley you purchase a 9 or 10 thousand dollar bike along with the 20 thousand dollar name.
I get what I need from my Roadstar and frankly do not have the desire to change.
I have seen a few Harely riders that are less than friendly but I have seen a few that are friendly. I guess there are all kinds like with everything else.
