I have a 2007 silverado,i have a little over ten thousand miles on it in about a year it has been a good bike, but recently i have been smelling gas and i cannot find were it is coming from,i can not find any leaks. Has anybody else have this problem and what they did to fix it?

I get a gas smell at trafic lights, I read here that it is normal since we have vented fuel caps. Unless it is some new or super strong smell I wouldn't worry too much, especially since you can't find a leak.

Now that it is Summer heat will expand the gas more and could also be part of the problem.

The tank is vented to keep it from exploding or imploding. You will smell gas after a good ride. Nothing to worry about as long as there is no leak. Car gas tanks do this too, but the go threw a filter so you don't smell it.

Mine does it as well. I've smelled it ever since I got it when it had just under 3k miles almost a year ago. At 11k miles, I still get a whiff of it. Usually after I've ridden it for a while and parked it in my garage.

The funny thing is everyone says it is normal but my girlfriends Harley doesn't smell like gas. I assume her gas tank is vented too. She's had hers since 03 and our garage hasn't smelled like gas until I brought my bike home. I think it is more a Yamaha thing. I noticed the smell went down after I put in my air kit which involved removing the air box. I noticed the air box really had a strong gas smell. It does still smell a little like gas but just not as strong.

Just an off the top of my head theory(mine does this to) but it could be that since these are such high reving bikes and the engines are working harder than the normal cruiser that we may be running higher engine temps than a lot of other bikes and alot of this heat is going to be going right up into the fuel tank which may be making it warm up and vent alot more than her Harley. That could be total complete crap but it makes sense in my head and since this seems to be an issue that follows most of these 650's around it could be a valid point. Any others have a view on this? If you dis agree I wont be offended because like i said, It could be total crap out of my head, maybe just my attempt at sounding smart

virefaceone, no, I don't think your eyes are turning brown. lol. That does make some sense and quite possibly a valid answer. I have never had the gas smell with the Harleys I owned but this 650 I have now does the smell of gas thing all the time. Well, at least when the temp is up or I have been riding for a while. I think part of it also has to do with the way the tank venting is made and the carb overflow tubes are set up. When the pressure is higher then the cap may vent some but the carbs are probably getting a little extra fuel pushed into the bowls and causing overflow into the overflow drain (vent) tube. Not enough to leak and leave a drip but enough that the vapors are carried out through the tube. Just another opinion. Anyone else have a view point to consider?

this fuel smell, is it only with models before 09? because i've had my 09 650 for about 3 months and haven't noticed any fuel smell yet.

If the Harley is injected it will only vent thru the cap as the fuel system would be sealed. This could be why you do not smell it before.

That was the variable in this. Her Harley is injected. This made me think it may be a carburetor thing. I guess someone here who has or had a carbed Harley could say whether they got the gas smell too.

A friend of mine rides a Sportster 886 and he smells gas at times as well. That is also a carburated engine.

Iam glad iam not the only one,i had some one tell me that my floats could be sticking,he told me to drain the carbs and spray some carb cleaner up in them, haven't tried it yet though.

If you have gas leaking from your air cleaner, you have a stuck float. Just the smell is the tank venting.
