Can anyone explain how to disconnect the AIS on my 2002 Vstar 1100? Is this something I can easily do, or should I have a shop do it?
Thanks!!
You can do it.........

I printed up the pages with the instructions, but its about 5 degrees outside now, so I'll probably tackle this project next month. I will let you know how it turns out.
Thanks again for the info. The page you directed me to was awesome.
Wow, a whole 5 degrees. It's a heat wave. It's been between -4 and -20 here in Minnesota.
Yeah, you can do it. It's pretty easy.

Ravhite,
I ordered the plugs from your link, but I ended up not using them. The instructions warned of a "slight whistle". I didn't want to take the chance of having my bike whistle, so I followed the instructions from the first link. Basically you take the AIS pipes off and put a 10mmX25mm allen head bolt in each elbow coming out of the head. This allows you to skip removing that part (along with the forward down tube). The instructions tell you to put some high temperature copper silicone gasket on the bolts to ensure a good seal.
From what I have heard, removing the elbow (not the correct name) from the head can be a real pain.
The whole process took me just over 1 hour, and since I didn't hammer plugs into the engine it is completely reversible.
I am going to wait 24 hours for the silicone to cure, but I am sure the bike will run much better without the AIS since I did the "quick fix" by disconnecting the hoses yesterday and it ran waaayyy better.
I noticed that there are a couple of threads on AIS removal right now, so I thought that updating my info might help someone.
I would highly recommend printing the instructions from the link above for reference.
One last question......I removed all the AIS piping, but left the actual unit in place since it's just sitting there not hurting anything. Is it O.K. to leave it since it's disconnected?
Thanks again for all the information.
If anyone wants the plugs I ordered from BARON CUSTOM ACCESSORIES just let me know!
John
john good luck trying to get rid of the baron plug. i also was afraid of using them. i bought the no whistle plugs. i can't seen to get rid of the baron's for "free" with "free" shipping. i've got 2 sets of plug. my bud is going to risk it on his bike.

Yeah, it just doesn't seem to be a good idea to smash these plugs into the engine if they are going to ruin the sound of the bike.
When I read the posts here about problems with these, I was a little hesitant. When the directions that came with the plugs warned of the same thing, that convinced me not to use them.
They have sold a lot of these, and I am pretty sure they will work fine if installed correctly. The whistling is probably due to guys not getting the plugs in straight.
I guess it's going to be $25 down the toilet!!
ok go with night sky cutsoms!! they have a plug that is no whistle garunteed!! it is really easy to remove, and eay installation. i did mine and after i got bike tuned it was awesome!! at first i had trouble after installation, i went over it again and all was good, i just needed a good tune with all else i had done. 1 good pieces of advice; SLIDE HAMMER you can get a real good one at any advanced auto parts to rent.
good luck
gibby glad to hear all is well with your bike. i was worried you had a cracked head. i'm real happy with my no whistle plugs. it may be my imagination but my bike feels like the motor slows me down more when i let off on the throttle. a great feel when running the twisties. anybody have this experience?
MY THROTTLE ADVANCEMENT was what was part of my problem, which is why when i really got on it it would "sputter" but if i ease into it, it was fine.
i simply removed everything, and reinstalled it all, it seemed to do trick? i mean i dont know P.F.M.
