    I have a 2002 Classic that I really enjoy. I'm pretty new to this, but I've had the bike about six months and really like it. One thing though.....when starting it, it clanks quite a bit and then about 60% of the time when I cut it off it clanks again. I have a feeling it's caused by "kickback" and I'm wondering if this could be caused by a timing problem. Any ideas?

    I don't really know what the problem might be, but I do know that some of the earlier V-Stars had a problem with the starter gears. I am not sure if this was ever addressed as a running change, but I have heard about this mostly on earlier models (the first few years of production).

    Thanks. Not sure what you mean by a "running change". Do you think that changing the starter would make a difference, or is it deeper than that?

    I've read quite a lot of posts here and you seem to know what you're talking about. I'd appreciate your thoughts.

    Hey silverfox39,
    I may have something for you to consider. I believe the sound you are hearing is the starter clutch mechanism beginning to fail. My '06 Vstar 1100 had this issue last year. It finally totally failed. The starter motor would spin but it would not engage the engine. Cost me about $800.00 CAD to have it repaired at a local shop - $600.00+ for the parts alone. I was told that this mechanism is the major weak part of these bikes. It fails often but Yamaha doesn't seem to really care. They are discontinuing production of the 1100 so I guess they were just ridin' it out. I've read somewhere that the TPS being out of spec can exacerbate the situation by causing a kick back. Other than keeping the TPS tuned, there isn't much you can do. Good luck with this.

    ...Not sure what you mean by a "running change"....
    By that, I mean a modification made to a production model without really calling attention to it. Manufacturers often do this to continually improve a product along the way. By the sound of it, Yamaha didn't do this anyway - there's at least one 2006 model (vakonman's) that has suffered from this issue.

    I would check the TPS. A lot of guys have found that setting it to the proper spec. will essentially eliminate the "clunk", caused by motor kickback. Good luck!
