I do not own a bike yet but I'm looking to get a V-Starr 1100 Custom.
I went to a dealer and they have brand new 2008 1100s for about $8500. Then brand new 2007 about the same and 2006 $8300. What kind of a deal is that? Who is going to buy anything older than 2008 in that situation.
On the other hand it's realy hard to find anything older and less expensive. I found couple of V-Stars on EBay for like 5-6K and then it makes you think if it's worth it if you can get a brand new for 8K.

What do you guys think about it? Did you buy brand new or used ? Dealer or private or eBay?

    THANK YOU.

One thing to consider with a used bike, is that there may be a lot of upgraded equipment on the bike. A new bike...at $8300 and by the time you add exhaust pipes, a new seat, a hypercharger or Big Air Kit...you'll be in close to $10,000.
But then again, with a new bike....you know where it's been. I bought my used 06 from a reputable dealer in mid January so I beat him up pretty good on the price. It had most of the upgrades I wanted already on it. $4500 later I'm out the door. I've still managed to drop way more $$$ than I'll ever admit in front of my wife on other goodies.... woo hoooo.....

Good luck on your search...something will pop up if you're lookin'

While I don't have the experience yet of most of the posters here (my hubby is the experienced one in this family) I would recommend checking other dealers if at all possible even if you have to make a drive. I picked up my '07 1100 Classic at the end of last season when my dealer was making room for the '08's and got it for $7000. You could still have the warranty work done at the dealer near you. My hubby is still giggling over the fact that he got his '05 Honda VTX1800 brand new from a dealer with one left over last fall for $9000. Since he keeps his bikes for about 10 years, the year didn't matter to him, just the "brand new" and "super cheap" part

So I guess my advice is call around maybe within 100 mile radius of your home to other dealers, you might find a gem.

There are tons of V-Star 1100s for sale here in Utah. Here is a link to a local classified section that will show you all the 1100s.

    ksl.com/index.php?nid=231&sid=74268&nocache=1&search=yamaha+1100&quick_search_cat=subcategory%3B144&x=0&y=0

The link above will show you bikes that have not sold yet so they may be asking a little to much. When a bike sells, it is removed and I have seen a lot of vstar 1100s get sold on that site.

This will help you know the price range. Also like others have said, be sure to check craigs list.

Whole bunch of them on eBay and couple on craiglist for (at) $5-6K.

I just bought a 2008 1100 classic for $7600 and the dealer installed a set of new pipes, jet kit, and ORK for free. At the time Yamaha was giving $1000 cash back on most of their bikes. Good Luck.

I bought mine off eBay but I also drove to NY State to pick it up. I had no problems. Looking for my next one on eBay too and a few forums like this one and venturerider.org and a few other ones...Good Luck and Happy Hunting

I got my 02 Custom for $2500 but I've been told those deals are few and far between. Hope you love yours like I love mine. I keep looking at other cruisers but I like my bob-tail rear too much to go with the longer fenders most others have.

I bought my 02 in October for $4700 with only 3K miles on it. Almost new. I love cycletrader.com. You can pick your location and the bike you want and you get all the matches. I looked for about 6 months before I found this one and drove an hour to pick it up. Still not sure V Star is the right choice for me. I'd probably sell it for what I paid for it to find something else. If I had to do it over again, I'd hold out for a VMAX.

I cannot emphasize enough that you should test drive lots of bikes if you'll find the dealers that will let you. I had my heart set on a Shadow Sabre and ended up not liking any of the ones I test drove. I instead bought a V Star after test driving one of those. Turns out if I would have kept going I would have ended up with a sportier bike. My cruiser is okay maybe 10 years from now but right now, I want to ride fast.

Well I'm 6'3" 230 lbs. so i was looking for like the BIGGEST bike out there. I sat on most of the bikes and this one feels the best and it's still priced ok.

I purchased a new 2008 Vstar 1100 Silverado Raven and paid $9100.00 for it.
After reading some of the post here I feel like I got screwed.

    Did I?

The bike did come with studded leather saddle bags, windshield, a "sissy bar" (if that is what they are still called) and the passenger and driver seats are studded. They also thru in a helmet valued at $69.99.

I went in to the dealer and inquired about the Carb sync process because of the vibration/rumbling I was getting at 60-70 mph. The bike has 622 miles on it and has done it since I got it about 3 weeks ago. The guy in the service department said it would be up to "Yamaha" whether it would be covered by the warranty. I told him that I felt it should be covered because it should have been taken care of when the bike was prepped for sale. He did'nt seem to be concerned about that. I also enquired about the 600 mile check up and he said it would be about $150.00 or $300.00 if the valves had to be adjusted. I asked how they would know if they needed adjusting and he said that they all pretty much needed to be adjusted so I am going to plan on $300.00.

I purchased this bike to ride back and forth to work to save on gas and I really like it. I don't plan on putting a bunch of miles on it. I start off slow and don't drive it hard. Should I worry about high maintence cost?

    Thanks for any input.

I got lucky. A guy that works on classic cars took it as a trade for some engine parts from the original owner. He doesn't ride and had no use for it, and just wanted it out of his garage. Heard about it through a friend of a friend. Wasn't really 100% serious about getting a bike, but when a deal like that comes along that 100% sureness comes along with it. Plus I figured worse case scenario I decided I didn't want I sell for double what I paid, but I don't see myself giving it up anytime soon.

I picked up my 08 V-Star 1100 Silverado off of Craigslist. It had 350 miles, not even broken in. I test rode one at a local dealership. They wanted $9k with the $1k Yami cash. Two days later, I brought home this bike with 350 miles for $7k. I'm quite happy with the deal and the bike.

Seems like most owners are very satisfied with their bikes here.
I have a deposit on one [ 1100 Custom , 2007 model ] should have it in a week or two.
I looked at Vulcans , Shadows, others ...
The 1100 fitted me the best & I love the body stlye of the bike.
Let you know more after owning it for a few days.
    Good luck on your search.
