I put new risers on my 2002 Vstar 1100. They are 4.5" with a 1.5" pullback. The clutch cable looks fine until I turn the bars all the way to the right. Then it gets tight and seems like it actually engages the clutch. This only happens when I am going at very slow speeds while parking.
Can I replace the clutch cable myself, or does the dealer need to do it? Does anyone know where I can pick up a longer cable?
Thanks for any input!
You can do it. Its really easy. You'll need to find a +2" cable. I got mine from Baron's out in California. Here's the baroncustom.com/catalog/display/880/index.html
On the left side of the bike, you can see where the cable goes into the chassis. That is a beauty cover. Take that off and you can see the linkage where the end of the cable attaches. At the lever end, you just loosen the adjuster until you have enough slack to turn the cable out through the slot and slide the cable out with the button.
Down at the clutch actuator, there is a thin metal tang that holds that end of the cable in place.Just bend the tab down and the cable comes loose and slides right out.
Installation is the reverse. Finsh by readjusting the cable at the grip until there is just a little play in the lever, maybe 1/4". The whole job takes about 20 minutes.
Cheers,
Thank you very much!
Thank you very much!
My Pleasure!!
You may be able to just reroute it instead of getting a new cable. Where is it hung up. When I put risers on my 650, I just removed the clutch cable guide off the side of the frame and I was good to go.

Same here, I have the 1100 and installed the Baron DT. The re-route was easy and involved only taking loose at the handle bar end. The risers made a huge difference in comfort. It's amazing what a 1 1/2" pullback will do!!
vstar20- was there anything else that needed to be done with the baron dt besides rerouting the clutch? Im also looking at those. Jpcycles says they work with stock cable and lines and it says its a 2 inch of pullback. Just want to be sure before I order them. Thanks.

I had to replace the brake line from the splitter to the master cyclinder. Mine was about a quarter inch too short. Some have been lucky and did not have to replace the brake line. I don't know what some do and some don't??? The brake line was no big deal and only cost twenty something dollars.
Thanks, I think I might order the extended lines just incase.

I'll try this first. Thanks.
Just an update.......I rerouted the wires around the outside of the forks and now there is plenty of slack.
Thanks for the tip "retzdaret".
Glad it helped.
