    I'm curious as to whether you have to remove the gas tank to change the spark plugs on these bikes- the shop manual is of no help.

    No. Take the screws out of the rear of the tank and prop it up with a block of wood. I have 16,500 and just checked my valves. You don't have to change those plugs at 8k... that's silly.

    I agree. Look at the plugs at 25-30k.

    The Yamaha service manual for 950 says replace plugs every 8,000 miles or 12 months.
    Not that they need it but that's what it says..............

    may be off topic but i didn't want to start a new thread. when is it a good time to replace the battery? i don't want to buy a battery tester but don't want to wait until it is dead before replacing it.

    Lori's (wife) 950 has 17k on it and I have looked at the plugs and put them back in. I will check them again at 30k.

    My wife's 950T has 6,000 miles.
    ? for you does the 950 have 2 plugs or 4 plugs (2 per cylinder) ?

    Only 2 plugs total.
