I'm constantly trying to switch from 5th to not existing 6th gear. It is me or you have the same feeling that the RPM are high on the 5th?
Me Too!!
Me Three......
i have the same problem i thought it was just me cause it my first bike but i do everytime heck i have counted and still done it
me either 7th or 4th
I'm glad that it's not only me. I was getting really angry for not knowing what gear I'm at.
While visiting my brother recently, I rented a Harley Road King so we could ride together (he has a Road*). Anyway, it had a 6th gear and a light that comes on when you're in it. Pretty nice, but then again, it is probably >2x the price of the V*.
I have the opposite problem. I went from an inline four to the V Star so the motor never seems to be reving high enough although I am getting used to it. According to my tach at 3400rpms the bike is going 70mph, on the old KZ it was 4700 (at) 70.
Yep, I do it all the time to!
My hubby says the same thing about his 1100 v* silverado...he thinks it needs another gear. On my 650 v* silverado, I'm always trying to shift up one more gear when I'm already in 5th. It's just a weird feeling/sound like it needs an overdrive or something. I'm hoping with time I'll get over that as I become used to the sound.
me too... oh, wait, I only have a 650
I don't think I'll ever get used to it. I'm always looking for the 6th gear. It makes it hard for long trips cause the vibration from the engine put my ass to sleep. I was just talking to my dad last week about it. He said he saw in JP Cycles catalog that they have a conversion kit to take the V* from a 5 speed to a 6 speed. Costs about $2000 he said. I'd have to look it up to confirm and don't have a catalog near me (couldn't find anything on their website).
I'm always doing this. It feels like it needs another gear to pull you away.
I had a shadow that had a light on the console when I reached top gear. I miss that.
I feel like an idiot when I'm flying, squeeze the clutch, and I'm still in top gear.
Another thing I do is push the turn signal release button all the time. I don't know why I'm doing it. Maybe because I don't want to be the idiot driving with the turn signal on. Still I seem to push it all the time and catch myself doing it.
I used to always be looking for 6th gear, until I put pipes, intake and jets in the thing. Now it only rarely happens.
But yeah, I feel stupid when I go for a gear that doesn't exist... at least with my Classic, you can check to be sure you're in top gear by just putting some gentle pressure with your heel on the heel-toe shifter. If there's no resistance, you're out of gears.
g
On every Yamaha I have owned I have done it so its very common! I feel I always want MORE. That is not a bad thing.
it could use a 6th no doubt. i do the blinker thing also im glad im not the only one i feel american again
Surely there must be an engineering company out there that can put a 0.78to1 ratio inline gearbox between the gearbox and the rear wheel ,basically splitting the shaft drive!!
If they have 5 to 6 speed conversions for Harleys why not for the V-STAR 1100,thats discrimitory to us v-star riders to which I thought that we are all equall.Lets march in the streets, protest to our governments, write to congress.
The Emancipation Proclamation was to equall all of us,why are we suppressed
Thats my 2cents

is that the rpm on the v-star 1100? I hate that it sounds so revved up and i dont know where it is. Sure sounds like its wrappin out.
Yep, at 70mph my V Star is reving 3400rpms and it revs at 3100 at 60mph. My brother in law has an 08 Electra Glide and he was told to keep it over 3000rpms in 6th gear other wise it lugs the engine and wears off the cam lobes. At 3000rpms he is going about 80mph.

Stupid question (thinking if I happen to apply too much pressure), but what does the "speed shift" feel like, when you fail to pull the clutch during an upshift? I vaguely recall hearing that an upshift is OK sans clutch, but a downshift can easily screw up a clutch/gears. sorry for the thread hijack, but curious minds...
