I looked at a 1999 Vstar 1100 today and it only had 1 disc brake on the front.
Most of the 1100's that I have looked at, 2000 thru 2006 have 2 discs.
It also had , I think it was a plastic light ( Indian ) on the front fender. I was told this was the original Vstar fender ornament. I don't know.
I'm thinking this is a 650. Also all emblems were decals, which needed replaced. Are they still available?
    Any help, also pictures please!
    Thanks.

Not sure about the 99's. Most of the 1100's I have seen have 2 disc on front. It could have went through a modification of removing 1 disc. This is not an uncommon practice. It will increase your stopping distance though. As far as the badges and or emblems for the bike those are available, usually by a individual who has removed them. Lots of owners don't like the badges that identify the bike. Hope this helps and more will chime in as they always do.

I have a 99 and yes there is 2 discs up front. There was never a fender ornament standard on a vstar. The easiest way to tell a 650 to a 1100 is if it has rear disc,1100 a rear drum, 650. The 99 1100s where all customs, the classic didnt come to the US till 2000.

Two more ways to tell the difference between a 650 and an 1100 would be:

    • The speedometer on the 650 is smaller than the speedometer on an 1100. Of course, if you are not looking at a 650 and an 1100, side by side, you would not be able to compare the size of the speedometers.
    • The choke lever on the 1100 is on the turn signal mechanism, on the left portion of the handlebars. Whereas the choke lever on the 650 is underneath the gas tank, on the left side of the engine.

Post some pics or the VIN. Last year there was a guy in southern Cali that was trying to sell a black 650 with and "1100" kit (NickRP picked it up). No such thing nor is it possible. You'd be surprised what some people try to pull and now many actually fall for it.

I don't think the V Stars had any fenders with Indian ornaments on the fenders. It may be the original fender, but someone may have bought the emblem and put it on the fender. Maybe something like this one -

I saw a 1100 a couple of years ago at a bike show. It was done up with some Indian parts such as the front fender light and a lot of fringe. The owner told me something to the effect that yamaha produced a limited number of these bikes. I remember thinking at the time it sounded like a bunch of BS and never thought to check the info out. Anyone ever heard of this limited run? Could the owner have beentelling the truth? Seems a bit more plausible now after readin this post.

I don't know about the Japanese manufacturers, but marketing low-volume models is something that Harley has done over the years. I kinda doubt it's ever been a staple of the Asian branding.

EDIT - I suppose the Honda Rune and CB-X are two exceptions, and there are probably others. Still, I always perceived the Asian brands to be mass-produced, inexpensive and (sometimes) preferable alternatives to the highly image-driven branding of Harley Davidson. That is, at least for the last 30 years or so.

The Japanese do limited run bikes but most of the "rare" bikes are ones that didnt sell well, the GTS1000A being a prime example. The Vstar has never had a limited edition with fender ornaments and such imported into this country.

The Vstar never had a fender ornament like you describe. They also came with dual brakes on the front, but it is a very easy mod to remove one. A lot of guys to it to open up the wheels a little bit.
